John Kirby is a 1981 graduate of Saint Petersburg Catholic High School and in 1985, a graduate of the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, where John Kirby had a bachelor of arts degree in history. John Kirby also holds a master of Science degree in international relations from Troy University and a master of arts in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College.
John Kirby Military Career
John Kirby was commissioned in September 1986 after completing officer candidate school at Naval Station, Rhode Island. John Kirby then qualified as a surface warfare officer aboard the guided missile frigate USS Aubrey Fitch before their husband was designated as a restricted line officer for serving as a public affairs officer.
As a public affairs officer, John Kirby had served at sea abroad on the aircraft career USS Forestal and on the staff of the commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet, which had embarked abroad on the command and control ship USS Mount Whitney. John Kirby completed tours as an instructor at the US Naval Academy; public affairs officer with the Navy flight demonstration squadron, editor in chief of the Navy flagship monthly magazine All Hands.
John Kirby had served as the deputy assistant secretary of defense for media operations while serving under the assistant secretary of defense for public affairs. In 2012 John Kirby was promoted to rear admiral and he had served as the US Navy chief of information. John Kirby had served as the principal spokesman for the Department of the Navy and provided strategic communication counsel for the secretary of the Navy and the chief of Naval operations.
