Naveen Patnaik Career

Before becoming a politician, Naveen Patnaik worked as a writer and has written four books. He also enjoys painting with oils. He faced criticism because he had difficulty speaking and writing in Odia, which is the official language of the state. Some people also didn’t like that he would deliver speeches in Odia that were written out using the Roman alphabet. Despite these challenges, Naveen Patnaik is the longest-serving chief minister of Odisha.

He wrote several books on Indian culture and heritage, including “A Second Paradise: Indian Courtly Life 1590-1947” and “The Garden of Life: An Introduction to the Healing Plants of India.” His literary work showcased his deep understanding of India’s rich cultural history and traditions.

Naveen Patnaik’s entry into politics was unexpected. After the sudden demise of his father, Biju Patnaik, in 1997, Naveen was persuaded by well-wishers and supporters to take up his father’s political legacy. He founded the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in 1997, a regional party named after his father, and allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the 1998 general elections. He was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from Aska constituency in Odisha.

Naveen Patnaik became the Chief Minister of Odisha for the first time in March 2000. His tenure marked a significant shift in Odisha’s political and administrative landscape. Known for his clean image and commitment to transparency, Patnaik implemented several reforms to curb corruption and improve governance.

He introduced various welfare schemes aimed at poverty alleviation, health, and education. The KALIA (Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation) scheme, launched in 2018, aimed to support farmers by providing financial assistance, thereby boosting agricultural productivity and rural economy

Naveen Patnaik received several accolades for his work as Chief Minister. In 2010, he was rated the second-best Chief Minister of India by an NDTV Opinion Poll and was named the Most Popular Chief Minister of India by the India Today-ORG-Marg Mood of the Nation Poll. He was also honored by the United Nations for evacuating nearly a million people before Cyclone Phailin hit Odisha in October 2013.

Additionally, he was ranked the second-best performing Chief Minister by another NDTV Opinion Poll and received the Best Administrator Award from Outlook in 2017. In 2018, he was awarded the Ideal Chief Minister award by former President Pratibha Patil during the eighth Indian Students’ Parliament in Pune.
