It was written and directed by Ari Aster in his first feature film. The movie stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne. The story revolves around a family grieving the death of their secretive grandmother, only to be haunted by a demonic presence.
Ari Aster gained attention from the production company A24 with his short horror film “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons.” This led to A24 approving “Hereditary” as his first full-length movie. Aster designed the film to be mainly a family drama, split into two distinct parts. Filming occurred in Utah in 2017, with most indoor scenes shot on specially built sets on a soundstage to create a dollhouse-like look.
“Hereditary” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2018, and was released in theaters in the United States on June 8, 2018. The film was well-received by critics and earned over $82 million, making it A24’s highest-grossing film at that time. This record was later broken by “Everything Everywhere All at Once” in 2022.
Hereditary Movie Story
Annie Graham is a small-scale artist who lives with her husband Steve, who is a psychiatrist, and their two kids: 16-year-old Peter and 13-year-old Charlie. They go to Annie’s mother Ellen’s funeral, where Annie is surprised by how many people are there. Annie joins a group for people dealing with loss and talks about her difficult relationship with her mom until Charlie was born, which changed things. Meanwhile, Steve gets a call saying Ellen’s grave was vandalized but doesn’t tell Annie.
Peter gets invited to a party, and Annie insists that Charlie goes with him. At the party, Peter leaves Charlie alone and suggests she tries some cake being passed around, not knowing it has walnuts which she’s severely allergic to. After eating it, Charlie goes into shock because of her allergy. As Peter rushes her to the hospital, she leans out of the car window for air. Peter swerves to avoid hitting a dead deer on the road, accidentally causing Charlie to be decapitated by a telephone pole. Shocked, Peter drives home and leaves Charlie’s body without a head in the back seat of their parents’ car. Annie discovers it the next morning, horrified.
After Charlie’s funeral, the family falls apart: Peter isolates himself, feeling guilty about what happened to his sister; Annie grows bitter and angry at Peter for his part in the accident, while Steve tries to keep the peace. Annie becomes friends with someone from her support group named Joan, who teaches her how to do a séance to talk to Charlie’s ghost. That night, Annie convinces her family to try it. Strange things start happening, and Peter gets scared when Annie seems possessed by Charlie’s voice until Steve splashes water on her. Peter starts experiencing spooky stuff, and Annie thinks Charlie’s ghost is angry and evil. When she sees threatening images in Charlie’s drawings, she throws the sketchbook into the fire. But oddly, her clothes catch fire too, and they only stop burning when she takes the book out of the flames.
Annie looks through her mother’s old belongings and discovers a photo album revealing that her mother, Ellen, was known as “Queen Leigh” and led a coven. The album also shows that Joan was one of her followers. Another book Annie finds describes a demon king named Paimon, who wants to possess a male body, promising wealth and rewards to the person who summons him. In the attic, Annie finds Ellen’s decaying, headless body and sees occult symbols drawn in blood.
While Peter is outside his school, Joan approaches him and attempts to expel his spirit from his body for the demon king. Later, in class, Peter is overtaken by an unseen force and hits his head against his desk, breaking his nose. Annie tells Steve about her connection to Charlie’s sketchbook and begs him to burn it, as she can’t bring herself to do it. Steve refuses, thinking Annie is losing her sanity. In desperation, Annie throws the book into the fire, but instead of the book burning, Steve bursts into flames. Annie watches in shock, but then her expression turns blank as she is possessed by the same force that took over Peter.
As naked coven members gather inside and around the house, Peter wakes up after dark. He discovers his father’s burned body and sees one of the coven members nearby. Possessed Annie chases Peter through the house. He tries to hide in the attic, but Annie follows him and uses a piece of piano wire to behead herself. Peter jumps out of the attic window, and a glowing orb enters his body, bringing him back to life with Charlie’s mannerisms.
Peter follows Annie’s floating headless body to Charlie’s treehouse. Inside, Joan and other coven members, along with the headless bodies of his mother and grandmother, are worshipping a mannequin with Charlie’s severed, crowned head. Joan takes the crown and places it on Peter’s head, calling him Charlie. She explains that Charlie is now Paimon, as the coven has provided a male host for the spirit. The coven members then hail Peter as King Paimon.
